Caroline, if you knit with weight 4, your square may be too thin to be warm and you might need to use a baby yarn with it and knit both yarns together.

Don't buy the weight 6 super-bulky as it is much too thick for a square.  The weight 5 bulky/chunky makes very nice squares that are warm with a size 10 needle.  It is best not to use bamboo as it is not very warm.  Wool or wool/acrylic blend will be good as they have warmth.  I would aim for weight 5. Or use weight 4 coupled with baby yarn.  Worsted weight is usually weight 4.  The people who crochet use weight 4 a lot because of the nature of their stitches, but I personally like weight 5 for knitting.  I order mine online from a company called Knitpicks.  I like their Brava Bulky and it comes in lots of bright colors.  Reasonable price.  It is acrylic but makes a nice square.  Good luck.

Hi All, I'm new here and need help to start. Website says "You can use different types of wool or wool blend yarns, acrylic yarns or bamboo and lighter weight yarns can be doubled up." Another page said "worsted yarn" double knit.  So I bought Caron kindness, weight 4.  Is that right?  And then I knit 2 pieces of yarn at the same time? Or should I instead purchase a chunky yarn that is a weight 6 instead and just single knit it?

Thanks! Caroline

THE  IMPORTANCE  OF  AN  ONGOING SUBSCRIPTION

Every month, Ronda faces several non-optional expenses like rent, customs charges, and fuel for the

KASvan and she needs to know these are covered so she can balance the budget.

Even a small subscription like $5 per month makes a huge difference in her planning and gives

financial stability to our operations in South Africa.

If you are able, please consider subscribing to an ongoing monthly donation.  While it may seem

like a drop in the ocean, it makes a huge difference in our ability to keep wrapping

our blankets around vulnerable children.
