Square Circle Forum

Here is a check list to use when sending a parcel to South Africa

  • Squares are laid flat and the (50 cm/20 in) tail is butterflied to the square
  • Bundle squares in lots of 5 or 10, if possible
  • All slip-ins have tags and labels removed and are taken out of original packaging so as to not incur duty in South Africa
  • Complete the downloadable pdf form available here. Include the top section inside the parcel.  Securely attach the address label to the outside of the parcel and add your return address.
  • Check the International Postage discussion before mailing
  • Mark “Knit Items For Charity Only” and “No Commercial Value” on the customs declaration.
  • Declare a money value of $1 [minimum required by Canada Post]
  • Check the box for “gift”
  • If you have a small scale and a measuring tape, weigh and measure the parcel before going to the Post Office.(see: Postage rates to South Africa)

Nothing is worse than being 2 grams over or just a few centimetres too long.

If this happens, take the parcel home and repack or if the postal clerk is agreeable, open the parcel and take out a square and reseal.  When my parcel was over by 3cm in size, the clerk opened the top and squashed the box down to the required size:)

Linda,

This is an excellent guide and could be useful for all forum members.  Every post office has 'size of package' parameters, besides weight.  So, all we need to do is follow your steps and keep the local parameters in mind.

Well done for this Linda!

Thanks for the tips in both posts Linda!

Just one dumb question. I'm printing out the label at home and I have to fill in City and Zip Code. Would Bryanston be the City and 2021 the zip?

Thanks very much!

Not a dumb question Laurie.  There is no such thing on the forum :-)

I would think Bryanston is the city and 2021 the zip.  I haven't come across that on the form as I have used the labels on Elaine's brochure.

How exciting to be sending off a parcel....or two ??

Thanks so much Linda! I hadn't seen Elaine's brochure. It's wonderful! I'm actually going to be sending quite a few packages. I have been spreading the word on my blog and have received 324 squares to date! It's very exciting!

324 !!!!  That's marvellous !  That's great that you are also spreading the word on your blog.

Thanks Linda!

Just moving this to the top of the list.

I have a large amount of squares to send to SA (Probably if I were stuffing it in suitcases it would fill 6-8 large suitcases full )made by many of the senior ladies from our church. we travelled to SA in july and took some along. They keep making them and I don't want to tell them to stop but now I have a huge pile to get to SA .Any suggestions?

Kathleen
