Square Circle Forum

Postal costs for incoming parcels has risen alarmingly since mid-April because of a new rule that ALL overseas parcels attract the customary handling fee and that has been increased to R51.50 PER PARCEL[$3.74USD].  In past years the fees were lower and graduated (ie. R24.00[$1.74USD] for a small parcel / R40[$2.91USD] for a large parcel) but that has been changed.

In the past only around 20% of the incoming parcels attracted the levy, now ALL parcels are included in the calculation. So, for instance, in the past KAS would normally pay between R750[$54.52USD] and R1500[$109.03USD] for an incoming postal collection, this week Ronda paid R2200.00[$159.91USD]and on at least two occasions in late April and May she paid approximately R3500[$254USD].

It is unfair, but the postal authorities have spotted a lucrative gap in the system and they are completely unmoved by a charitable enterprise being penalized.  These are not customs tariffs, KAS never pays those - they send parcels back for re-assessment and they always come back free of customs.

The bank balance reduces monthly as costs to run KAS this year have risen[see graph] We are looking for ways to cut costs, but with PO charges going up, with fuel costs increasing dramatically in SA and generally prices rising across the board ... KAS needs your support

Our monthly donors continue to be the backbone of financial support

for Knit-a-Square.

These monthly donations allow KAS to continue to serve the children of South Africa.

Thanks to generous one-time donations and numerous purchases in the KAS Shop, the May total has surpassed our expectations.

However, Ronda is being hit with a charge for every parcel arriving at the moment - the postal services are trying to make a profit at our expense! We will need extra help financially until such time this issue can be resolved. The most effective method is a regular subscription as this develops a sense of growth and hitting a target more likely!

Thank you so much, Arlene. Thomas is a godsend to Ronda.

Thanks Arlene!

Thanks Linda for the new cash flow figures and the details Ronda has sent with regard the postal charges being implemented.

Thanks Pam for posting the Cash Flow graph in your intro.

It is good to know the Cash Flow for KAS on a monthly basis.

Inflation and extra costs are a worldwide problem.  I hope those that are able, will contribute a little to help keep KAS in the black.  I do understand that many members are taxed themselves just by posting their creations to KAS.  Thank you for your contributions, they are keeping the children warm this winter.

I have already contributed a little, it is so important for Ronda to have Thomas's help.

Okay I wanted to set up a separate $5 a month subscription to help pay Thomas a stipend.  Nowhere on the PayPal page did it give me an option to mention this. Am I to assume then that the $5 extra a month will just get lost in general funding? Just wondering and feeling a bit vexed as I really wanted it to go towards Thomas specifically.  Any answers appreciated. Thanks. (I have already set up the monthly $5 subscription. I have one already for KAS in general for more, so I thought this should be separate.) Will it somehow be earmarked?

Thanks so much Jeanne.  What a good way to support Thomas. Also, Ronda will know that the $5 will be there every month.

I don't know why there wasn't an option to leave a comment when donating on PayPal.  There is usually a fill in box available.

I'll let Ronda know that you have earmarked this subscription for Thomas.  Thanks again.

Thanks Linda. What I've done is cancelled both subscriptions and bundled them into one, to save costs. So it's $5 from the main amount of $25. I hope to up it in future but for now, thanks for telling her the $25 is in the new amount sent.

Thanks Jeanne.  I shall let Ronda know.

Hello - I am already sending a monthly donation via paypal, I can't see an easy way to increase it, is it best just to set up a 2nd donation?

Sarah Hunter (London UK)

Hi Sarah.

I think I will let Linda reply to this, as she knows more about the monthly donation set-up. As Linda is in Canada and it's only 6am in her area, it maybe a little later before you receive a reply.  :))

I do my monthly donation through the KASshop.

The Donate button provides 2 options:

  1. One time donation
  2. Monthly subscription               [click the box]

Because of PayPal/banking fees, KAS asks that your donation be 5USD [or more].  Anything less, means your donation is eaten up with fees.  Thank you!

Our goal is to remove the monthly deficit that Ronda and her team have to deal with. You can:

1. Make a donation whenever you are able.

2. Sign up for an ongoing monthly donation (subscription).

3. Shop at the KasShop!
